The Regional Operational Program (POR) ERDF "Regional Competitiveness and Employment Objective" is the programming tool that the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region has prepared to define the areas of regional territorial development that can benefit from the contributions of the European Structural Funds, those of the State and regional ones between 2007 and 2013.

There are 6 intervention Axes, among these Axis 2 is the one aimed at promoting environmental sustainability through a series of initiatives identified in line with the strategies defined by the Lisbon and Gothenburg Councils.

Precisely as part of this Axis, the Municipality of Doberdò del Lago presented the "Nature of the Karst" project with the aim of proposing a series of interventions aimed at enhancing the environmental and natural resources of the Regional Nature Reserve of the Doberdò and Pietrarossa lakes, to improve its usability and promote its attractiveness.

The first intervention involves a functional adaptation of the building intended for the "Gradina" Visitor Center of the protected area. Specifically, a functional adaptation of the southern section of the area intended for use as a bar / restaurant is envisaged with the remaking of the waterproofing of the roof and the adaptation of the wastewater disposal network.

On the sidelines of the series of works planned within the Gradina Visitor Center area, an environmental redevelopment intervention is also underway. The work involves the general cleaning of an area of about 400 square meters, currently set on a semi-artificial rocky slope, the safety of a crumbling retaining wall and the rocky wall delimiting the area, the arrangement of some areas ( surface area of approximately 200 square meters) as a rock garden and the creation of a small pond with Mediterranean plant species for educational purposes closely linked to the activities of the Center.

The second planned intervention concerns the construction of a photovoltaic system at the service of the Gradina visitor center.

The project also includes a dissemination phase through the implementation of information and promotion initiatives for the planned interventions. These initiatives consist in the organization of the workshop "Environmental quality assessment course in agro ecosystems: scientific approach to the analysis of the rural landscape" which will be held at the visitor center from 20 to 22 June 2014 and the creation of educational workshops aimed at of the themes of the project.
